Ring of Fire News

What's up with the biggest thing happening in mining in NW Ontario?

What did they say about the Ring at the Northern Leaders’ (x2) Debate?

Had some lunch at the big ballroom at the Valhalla this afternoon, and here’s a few tidbits from the Monday lunch-time debate with Ontario Liberal leader Katheleen Wynne and Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath (Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak was in southern Ontario instead):

  • Ring of Fire (RoF): Infrastructure – Both Wynne and Horwath committed to funding for RoF infrastructure.  Wynne repeated previous commitments ($1B, with or without federal matching, but again calling for the feds to chip in some cash, too).  Horwath was more specific about committing funds than she has been in the past (“$1B or whatever it takes,”), but her party’s platform document – page 8 of 9 here – shows no identified funding for RoF.
  • RoF: Consultation – The leaders took a a question about whether they, if elected, would expand consultation and discussions with First Nations east of the RoF.  Horwath said “there should be a direct, up-front role for the province to ensure proper consultation, discussion and revenue sharing,” committing to “widespread, respectful consultation.” Wynne said the framework agreement signed recently with Matawa is just the first step in the consultation process, adding she’d heard, for example, Attawapiskat’s concerns about water quality and watershed effects from RoF development. She said “all affected communities” should be part of any “discussions” (given the municipal, business and First Nation audience members in attendance, I couldn’t tell if she meant both First Nations and municipalities should participate in these “discussions”).
  • (Not exactly RoF, but still mining stuff) Provincial Ministries – In her closing statement, Wynne said she would maintain separate Ministries of Aboriginal Affairs, Natural Resources and Northern Development & Mines if returned to power.  Horwath didn’t say anything about the issue.

That’s it, that’s all.  More RoF news coming later this week as usual.

-From the following, I would take it that there was no discussion on KWG’s recent proposal re: ONTC as the Development Corporation.

    • Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not Wendy 🙂

There was no discussion of KWG’s latest at the Northern Leaders Debate because none of the panelists asked questions about it.
